How to save in Silent Hill: Townfall

Pick up any working phone and dial 100. That is the manual save. The game autosaves often as you work through objectives and chapters, but searching the town can go a long while without one, so save at a phone before you wander off.

The numbers are on a Your Local Services flyer to the right of the first phone booth in the Town Square.

When the game saves for you, and when it does not

Autosaves

Frequently, as chapters progress and main objectives are completed. The publisher’s own survival tips still add “There are autosaves, but it’s worth saving often, from any working phone.”

Long gaps

Roaming the town areas for items, codes and collectibles usually does not trigger an autosave. A death there, without a filled IV bag to revive with, sends you back to your last save, so a long search may need doing again.

Before a stealth stretch you have not done yet, use the nearest phone. How to get through those stretches with less waiting is on the stealth page.

One autosave, 20 manual slots

With 20 manual slots, there is room to keep a save from each chapter you may want to come back to.

There is no chapter select, and finishing the story does not open one. Getting back to an earlier chapter means reloading a save from it or playing up to it again in a new run, which is why two particular saves matter for the extra endings. Where to make them is on the chapters page, and what they are for is on the New Game Plus page.

Phones worth a detour

ChapterPhoneWhy stop
1The first phone booth in the Town SquareThe flyer with the save number is beside it. Save before you head off to explore.
4Shorefront Family Clinic, on the reception deskThe clinic's only phone is behind the locked reception door. The code is 2896. All door codes
4The booth on Farrow Street, before Jess's houseSeveral monsters roam the streets between here and the house.
10The booth the chapter starts in, Clara Woods EstateThe ground level is where the brick trophy is set up, and this is the save right before it.
15The SWDP control room, beside the CCTV systemA phone on the wall, and both doors lock. Save again after the clamp release panel, before the red crank. Why that save matters

Other phones sit in shops, the pharmacy and rooms you can lock; any of them saves. The other numbers you collect along the way are on the collectibles checklist.

If the game keeps crashing

On PC, a crash can cost you the progress since your last save. Konami says a performance patch is in the works; until it lands, dial 100 at every phone you pass. The fixes the publisher posted, and what players changed, are on the PC stutter and crashes page.

The trophy that asks you not to call

Reject The Help: After meeting Richard, do not use a phone to save the game. 1% of Steam players have it.

The game prompts you to call 100 once at the start, when you meet Richard, and autosaves keep running for the whole run. The stretches that can cost you are the long searches of the town areas. It can also wait for a later run; the order that works is on the trophies page.
